Programs and Population Served:
The Orleans Conservation Trust (OCT) is one of two private
organizations holding title to conservation land in Orleans.
It has acquired rights to more than 528 acres of land (as
of December, 2004) on which it either holds title or conservation
restrictions in perpetuity. As the responsibility for preserving
our environment increasingly transfers from the role of government
to individuals, OCT provides the organization through which
residents of Orleans can participate in preserving our town's
scenic and natural beauty. The year-round population of Orleans
is 6,300. This number triples in the summer.
OCT membership numbers approximately 900 individuals and families.
Our annual meeting is held in early Fall and the Board meets
on a monthly basis. Current programs include:
· Land acquisition projects;
· Conservation Restriction Program;
· Land maintenance, trail management and guided walks of existing
properties;
· Distributing newsletters to promote education and awareness
of OCT activities;
· Providing brochures, maps and information to the public
to increase awareness of protected lands;
· Providing private support of town open space acquisition
efforts;
· Public workshops.
